Activities At The Château

Château de Rigny offers a wealth of activities.

Tourist activities in Besançon

You could spend hours simply strolling about the streets of Besançon city centre. There is plenty to do in Besançon, a city which is rich in Art and History.

Do explore the city centre with Saint-Jean Cathedral and the citadelle dating back to Celtic times. Discover the town's natural attractions at the Botanic Garden, Casino, Observatory and Gare d’Eau Gardens.

Explore its museums: the Resistance Museum, the Franche-Comté Museum and the Natural History Museum are all worth a visit.

Another interesting excursion is to the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans near Besançon.

Tourist activities in dijon and beaune

Dijon, a city of Art and History, offers a wide range of attractions: the Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Burgundy, a historic city centre, a mustard shop, botanic gardens, antique shops, and, why not, a walk along the banks of the canal.
Beaune, a historic and gastronomic city, boasts a wealth of treasures with its Hospices de Beaune, its Basilica and its Burgundy Wine Museum.

You mustn't miss:

  • The auction at the Hospices de Beaune, on the third Sunday in November, which is the highlight of the year for lovers of Burgundy wine.
  • For more than 25 years, the International Festival of Baroque Opera (one of the most prestigious in Europe) has been perpetuating every year the music traditions of the Court of the Dukes of Burgundy.

Gray (4km):

  • Renaissance Town Hall (1556)
  • Baron Martin Museum (in the 18th-century Château) overlooking the Saône Valley and the town of Gray (closed Tuesdays). Tel: 03 84 65 69 10.
  • Notre-Dame Basilica (15thcentury). Hôtel-Dieu Pharmacy (18thcentury).
  • Carmelite Chapel (closed Tuesdays, visits in July and August from 2 pm to 6 pm, the rest of the year on request at the Tourist Office).

Champlitte (20 km):

  • Renaissance castle
  • Castle Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions (open daily from 9 am to 12 noon and from 2 pm to 6 pm, except Tuesdays, Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings).
  • Church with Gothic tower (1437). Remains and Renaissance mansions known as ‘Spanish mansions’.
  • Feast of St Vincent in January with a procession…

Pesmes (19 km):

  • Fortified village on the banks of the River Ognon. Saint-Hilaire Chapel.
  • You will come across these attractive villages when you approach from the south from Dole.


Acey Abbey (25 km):

  • This is the outermost Cistercian church in Franche-Comté and is close to Pesmes.
  • It is still occupied by the monks of this order. Public mass on Sundays at 11 am.


Arc-et-Senans (50 km):

  • The Royal Saltworks were designed by the famous architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux (1736 – 1806). ‘The ideal city for the 18th century’. A Unesco World Heritage Site.


Langres (58 km):

  • Fortified village on the hillside (can be reached by funicular railway).
  • Superb 3.5 km walk round the village walls, private mansions.

Besançon (45 km):

  • Capital of Franche-Comté.
  • Old town and pedestrianised shopping street, Palais Granvelle (16th century), Museum of Time, Saint-Jean Cathedral, Market Square, walks beside the River Doubs, cruises on the Doubs, Roman remains.
  • Citadelle, built by Vauban, housing many museums and various events (Museum of Franche-Comte, Agricultural Museum, Natural History Museum, Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, Vauban Museum) and a variety of exhibitions. Zoo.
  • Office de Tourisme, 2 Place de la 1ère Armée Française.


Dijon (47 km):

  • Capital of Burgundy, a city well known for art and history.
  • Palace and place of the Dukes of Burgundy, Art Museum (inside the Palace of the Dukes), Philippe Le Bon Tower, Rue des Forges, Place François Rude, Notre-Dame Church, Palais de Justice District, Sainte-Bénigne Cathedral, Saint-Michel Church and many other monuments.
